LARRY KRAMER'S LETTER, "THE TRAGEDY OF TODAY'S GMHC" RESURFACE

  1. A NEW DIRECTION FOR GMHC

On Friday, September 13, 2013, GMHC announced the resignation of its CEO, Dr. Marjorie Hill, at the same time signaling that the agency would embark on “A New Direction for GMHC.”
As a member of the Consumer Advisory Board (CAB) leadership team, I’m urging all GMHC clients/member, especially my fellow CAB and Action Center members to engage in this discussion currently being waged regarding this new direction. I would propose a more pointed question as to what extent should we as stakeholders have in selecting the next CEO of this agency? Will the new CEO embrace this new direction? Should we pick a new CEO without first knowing the new direction of the agency?
What follows are some thoughts I wish to raise for your discussion and consideration in formulating a collective set of proposals for members of the GMHC Board. To expedite the discussion, I invite you to reference a report issued by the Sylvia Rivera Law Project entitled:
“The Bottom Up: Strategies and Practices for Membership-Based Organization.”

Proposal # 1: An Economic Survival Model for GMHC clients/members -
Specific initiative that will address issue of economic and social justice with focus on jobs, advocacy and coalition building. A collaborative proposal with MZA that will identify a specific number of AIDS Walk jobs for GMHC clients/members.
    Proposal # 2: Initiate a Desiring Change Project -
That GMHC force an activist/academic partnership between GMHC and a leading educational institute in NYC, i.e., NYU, Columbia U., etc.
Proposal # 3: GMHC Staff Mentoring Initiative - That the various departments within GMHC (Advocacy, Policy, Legal and Health and Wellness) coordinate a paid stipend position for GMHC clients/members. The concept is that the departments would coordinate the day to day work of the department with approximately 3-5 select group of clients/members. This initiative should go a long way in promoting transparency, openness and client/member empowerment.
Proposal # 4: That all meetings of the Board be open for client/members attendance.
Proposal # 5: Board Sponsored CAB Leadership Training Retreat Get-Away - Spring 2014
    Respectfully Submitted,
    Joseph Sellman, Vice-Chair
    GMHC Consumer Advisory Board
